Eltel Rail infrastructure wins first contract in Norway

Eltel has won its first rail infrastructure contract only a couple of months after establishing a rail business unit in Norway. The company has signed an agreement with Norsk Jernbanedrift at a value of NOK 17,5 million. The contract will be completed before the end of 2012.

Norsk Jernbanedrift is the main contractor and Norwegian State Railway Administration (Jernbaneverket) is the end customer. The scope of project is installing a cable duct at Oslo Central Railway Station including cable ladders, cable ducts with lids, foundations for cabinets and transformers, and grounding.

Rail and Road in Norway was established in January 2012 with Erling Haugnes appointed as Business Development Manager. The opportunity to enter the Norwegian Rail infrastructure market opened after one of the players failed to deliver its customer contract. Eltel hired a competent project team on spot and is now a new partner for the local Railway Administration.

The works are performed during all 7 days of the week, mostly during the night hours, in order to avoid interruptions to traffic. The project team consists of safety personnel, project manager, foremen, rail welders, electricians, excavator drivers and other workers with experience from cable duct constructions, telecom, rail repair and running rail projects in Norway. The team has all the required resources and competences to deliver all the contracted services by itself.

“This is a young and energized unit that has started to work by the Eltel Way. The next step is optimization to achieve a more cost efficient production and then further growth. Cable ducts is our business right now. We will continue to offer telecom solutions to rail next. Establishing a successful business in the Norwegian railway market is part of Eltel’s strategy to strengthen our position as the leading Infranet Service Company in Europe,” says Erling Haugnes.
