Eltel meets Lord Green on his visit to Finland

Lord Green, Minister for Trade and Investment, visited Finland in mid-June. Close to ten Finnish companies, including Cleantech Finland were invited by UK Trade & Investment in Helsinki to discuss the development of solutions to improve energy efficiency. Eltel was one of the invited companies.

Lord Green, who is also member of the House of Lords, has been Minister for Trade and Investment since January 2011. Prior to his introduction in the House of Lords he served as Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings.

Cleantech Finland is a network of top cleantech experts. Finland is a leading expert in cleantech areas such as energy, material and water efficiency, bioenergy, biofuels, combined electricity and heat production. Relative to the size of its population, Finland is the world’s leading researcher in the energy and environment field.

During the discussion Lord Green brought up the subject of improving energy efficiency of housing in Britain. A large share of houses in the UK were built a hundred or more years ago and do not meet today’s requirements of efficiency in use of energy. The participants at the meeting also discussed the subject of smart metering and related topics, including the role of regulation and data security, as utilities have access to personal household information through smart meters.

The meeting provided Eltel with a high level opportunity to discuss its entry to the UK, as a partner to build power transmission lines for the local grid company, as well as general aspects of the utility sector in Finland. Eltel is the Nordic leader in implementing smart metering to 3 million homes in Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The Group develops and implements smart solutions, for example, the control of poer networks and charging networks for electric vehicles.
